Customer ReviewsAverage Customer Review Great book for people who just can't grasp joomla, November 14, 2009 By S. Alachniewicz (Dublin, CA United States) After struggling with Content Management Systems like Drupal and Joomla I decided to take the plunge and purchase a book to help me through it. I am so glad I did. The first night I bought this book I took huge steps in converting my existing site to a Joomla CMS. I was able to add my own content to Joomla and make it look almost exactly like my current site. Still needed some work, but hey, it was my first night with the book.
The language is easy to follow, and assumes nothing. That is what makes it a great book for beginners. It does not assume you know html or CSS, but gives an overview of them. Having worked with these technolgies, I ended up just skipping them, but still found a ton of useful knowledge in this book.
I recommend this if you are struggling with Joomla. A Great Go-To Companion On Your Joomla Journey, October 14, 2009 By Rick Ortiz (St. Louis, MO) Barrie North is the friend you want in your corner when you're learning the vast possibilities afforded to you through the Joomla content management system. I went from absolute beginner to a confident Joomla designer and developer building upon the lessons learned from this book.
Though this manual offers great technical lessons it also explains to you the inner workings of the system in terms that will educate the novice without boring the professional.
I actually took this book on vacation and read it cover to cover. The well-organized and easy-to-find information make it a handy reference long after you have your first site up and running. I often go back to take in the information that I skimmed over the first time and find that there really is an encyclopedic bounty to be found within its covers.
And, the book is just the beginning. Be sure to check out North's definitive site with tutorials, tips, downloads and reviews galore. When it comes to Joomla, this is the bible!
Rick Ortiz,
editor, [...] Unstructured, October 11, 2009 By Reader (Oslo) The chapets about making your own template and css are very badly structured and poorly written. If you know the basic this book is waste of money. A good introductory book with enough detail for the more experienced, October 9, 2009 By Kevin SlaterI bought this book because I needed something to help me get over the hump on a project. I don't have a lot of free time to spend getting it done (it's volunteer work) so I needed a book that was easy to read but still had enough details to help me understand what was needed for any particular aspect of a typical Joomla site. The book has 3 chapters that each deal with setting up a particular kind of website with Joomla (school, restaurant and another that slips my mind). These helped to show how to apply the more general knowledge presented earlier to a specific type of website. A good book overall and I don't regret buying it. Absolutely the best Joomla book available - superb job on this, September 27, 2009 By Kenneth Calhoun (Colorado, USA) Being somewhat new to Joomla, I've been scouring the 'net for resources to help me communicate intelligently with my programmers, and do custom work for my sites as well as running them. This book is by far the best of the Joomla books available; I've bought quite a few.
What I like best about this one is that it goes beyond the basics (I also highly recommend "Joomla for Dummies", it's a very good book too); this gives a lot of detailed step by step tips in a very readable format. Super job on this book, it'll be a continuing reference for me for years to come; thanks very much Barrie for a super job with this - it's the world's best Joomla book, period.
