D. ThroopI bought this drive through amazon and it came from J&R. I plugged it in and everything seemed fine, for about 5 minutes. Whenever I turn on and plug in this drive, after about 5 minutes the computer can no longer read or write to the drive and the red error light on the drive lights up. J&R said to call lacie. After waiting on hold for a couple of hours lacie said to send them the drive. I have sent the drive to lacie and am now waiting.

C. Floyd....is all it too to break. I have never owned a LaCie Drive before. I picked this one up to replace my Western Digital My Book Premium 250 GB that has begun clicking. I formated and transferred all my data over and not long afterwards a red light came on. I have since tried to reformat, but my computer can't even access the drive to perform an operation on it. Additionally, during the few hours it was working, the fan spun up about every 3 minutes or so. I am not sure if that was because it was defective or if that as usual for these drives. Unfortunately there is not a lot of info available online about these drives so I can't be sure. I am returning it tomorrow. I will probably get another Western Digital. I can't speak to the usual reliability of these drives, but I probably won't get another after this.

It works fine, but it doesn't spin down on idle and the loud fan cycles on and off several times per hour.
