Beautiful, Stunning Design Designed by internationally acclaimed designer Neil Poulton, the Hard Disk features sleek and sophisticated styling. The case is entirely black with a fashionable, mirror-polished finish. A cool, blue LED strip on the bottom casts an ambient glow. The ultra-minimalist look will blend perfectly into home entertainment setups and workstations.
But don't think the design is just about looking good. Built to optimize heat dissipation so that it can operate without a fan, the drive is also designed for convenience and portability. At just 4.6 x 1.8 x 7.6 inches (WxHxD) and weighing barely two pounds, it can be easily transported into your briefcase, allowing you to shuttle files between your home and office, or move your work between your laptop and desktop with ease.
More Space for More Media
With 1 TB of disk space, the Hard Disk can store up to 70 hours of DV video, 270,000 songs, or over a million photos. Instead of having all this data stored on an internal drive on your desktop computer that can't be moved around, imagine being able to carry your entire digital media collection with you on your travels. You can also use the drive to back up your computer files for extra security.
Fast Performance and Exceptional Compatibility
With three connection interfaces, you'll be able to get the hard drive up and running quickly with your computer at home, your laptop at work, and just about any computer you need to connect to. The eSATA interface allows for a blistering 1.5 Gbps data transfer speed, perfect for video editing and other intensive work. FireWire 400 is also supported, which has long been a favorite of Mac users and provides 400 Mbps speeds. The nearly universal USB 2.0 interface is supported as well, and offers a transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps.
The LaCie Hard Disk works with both Macs and PCs and is simple to setup. It's plug and play and offers automatic formatting with LaCie Setup Assistant with customizable features. The hard disk features a rotational speed of 7200 RPM and has a cache of at least 8 MB, providing performance that won't keep you waiting for your files to backup or your media to play.
The drive is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, as well as Mac OS 10.3 or higher. Included in the box is LaCie's 1-Click Backup Software (Windows and Mac), as well as LaCie SilverKeeper Backup Software (Mac) making backups an easy and painless process.
Free One-Year Unlimited Backup Service
With the purchase of this LaCie Hard Disk, you will also receive a full year of LaCie's Online Backup service. With this service, the data that you store on your computer will be encrypted twice and uploaded to the offsite data center where they will remain encrypted, maintaining your privacy.
When you sign up for the service, software is added to your computer that looks for new and changed files to update. The service is completely automated and only backs up new and modified files when your computer is idle, so you don't have to do a thing, and your computer's performance will never be affected.
This service lets you upload an unlimited amount of photos, music, video, and documents for a full year. After that you can continue with the service for a low monthly fee. This is LaCie's way of ensuring that should anything happen to your Hard Disk -- should it get stolen or damaged, for instance -- your invaluable data will remain completely protected and accessible.
The LaCie 1 TB eSATA/FireWire 400/USB 2.0 Hard Disk, Design by Neil Poulton is backed by a 2-year limited warranty.

SO FAR SO GOOD, November 21, 2009

FOR A PERSON WHO ASSUMES MAGICAL LITTLE ELVES WORK INSIDE OF MY COMPUTER, I MUST ADMIT THAT THE DISK CONNECTED TO MY MACBOOK PRO WITH EASE, THE BACKUP SOFTWARE IS TREMENDOUSLY EASY AND I DIDN'T HAVE TO STRAY ONE BIT FROM THE PROMPTS TO MAKE THIS A GREAT ADDITION TO MY OFFICE. I JUST STARTED USING THIS PRODUCT BUT I CERTAINLY HAVE SOME PEACE OF MIND WITH THE THREE YEAR WARRANTY.
Not for DirecTV DVR expansion, November 5, 2009

I am not saying this drive will not work for your Tivo, I can only report that it would hang my DirecTV HR23-700 DVR almost every time I would perform certain actions(priority manager for certain would hang almost every time.) I have since replaced this with the WD MyDVR expander, Western Digital My DVR Expander 1 TB eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive WDG1S10000VN (Black) and have had no problems. Its too bad since the LaCie drive looks way cooler than the WD. The LaCie has a matching blue LED and slim black case, where the HD looks like a book with a big round yellow LED. Not an eyesore, just the LaCie looks like it was made to match.

I purchased this product looking for a simple backup drive that could perform incremental daily saves from one computer. The requirements are fairly simple ... just do it, at a reasonable speed, and keep working properly.
The install was no problem, and I thought the included software was installing OK. Unfortunately it kept telling me I was probably using bootleg software. I did the software configuration, and it took 8 hours to backup about 8 GB of data, uncompressed, and without security. Then, each day when it was supposed to do the incremental backup it would display the unauthorized use message and hold until I noticed it and continued.
I immediately wrote both Genie ( software ) and LaCie, and neither responded for several business days. They finally said to download the software from the LaCie site, which I did, but then it didn't read the original setup, so it didn't do any backups. Today I edited the "existing" setup and told it to do the backup expecting an incremental file based on the last backup. No such luck. Instead, it started a full backup. Of course he we go for another 8 hours, and although this is a quad processor, with Win 7, and 3+ GB of RAM, it just drags the performance of the machine down.
When you do register the software, you are immediately requested to upgrade to a better package.
I would like this drive to do the simple job for which it is intended, but I'm not very confident yet.

For a 1TB, the external HDD is amazing. I setup a RAID configuration for two of them last weekend. It is working perfectly and efficiently. One draw back, it does not support Firewire 800.

This is a beautiful looking drive. The Neil Poulton design speaks out with clean and sleek looks.
It is glossy black and the blue light is outstanding.
Neither Seagate's nor WD's external drives look so beautiful.
PROS:
1. 1TB is a lot of space - great.
2. Beautiful, sleek design
3. Triple interface - USB, eSATA and Firewire 400 (more on this in a moment).
4. Power button - I like the idea of having a power button on the drive, Seagate does not put one...tis comes in handy.
5. You can make the driv Mac and PC compatible simultaneously using the supplied software by LaCie...it's fairly easy. You're given the option to do so at the time of formatting.
6. LaCie's included software formatted the hard disk in a breeze and I was able to partition it easily using Vista's Computer Management utility.
7. LaCie's give vents at the bottomof the drive which is good as the whole body is made of hard plastic, so the body does not act as a heat sink.
CONS:
1. The glossy black finish looks beautiful but makes the drive a fingerprint magnet.
2. Noisy - this drive is noisy...you will notice the drive starting up and shutting down even if you are 15-20 feet away from it.
3. Firewire 400 cable - This does not work with Vaio's iLink outof the box, you need to buy an adaptor or a 4-pin cable to make it work with those. Well LaCie should specify that the cable will not work with 4-pin Firewire 400 jacks. You can buy a $3-$4 cable from amazon (that's what I did and it works fine) [...]
4. The HDD tends to get a little warm on prolonged usage, vents at the bottom help a lot but still it gets hot as the body is hard plastic.
Other than that an awesome product.
***UPDATE 11/12/2009***: After using this for a while I figured that the read speeds for the firewire interface is definitely more than the usb interface but for write speeds, firewire keeps decreasing (from 45mbps to 9mbps) while usb keeps consistent at about 25 to 30mbps. Can't say if this is an issue with the drive.
