Excellent Reference!, January 9, 2009

This book is by far the best I own in regards to mixing and mastering audio. It starts with the concepts and theory and continues on to extremely detailed aspects of the mixdown process. All of the book's explanations also have examples referenced from the included disc. I can't recommend this book enough. Everyone should have it around as a reference, whether they're composing, recording, mixing, mastering, or all of the above (and more). The author really knows his stuff and this is apparent throughout the book. It's one of those references you can pick up, flip to any random page, read it, and learn something new. It might make for dry cover-to-cover reading, but when you need to look up a specific aspect of the process it is covered clearly and concisely with good examples.
A Potentially Good Book Utterly Ruined by Zero Proof Reading, December 27, 2008

This is bar the far biggest mistake I ever made when buying a book based on the reviews of others. The book seems as if it has not been through the proof reading process. There are mistakes quite literally on every page, not only in terms of punctuation, etc. but also syntax and general grammar. It is so bad that I began to highlight them with a marker but after getting to eighty by page forty I had to give up. Such an astronomical level of errors made it impossible for me to continue reading the book as I simply couldn't make sense of it. It's as if the tome was penned by someone from Mars who then had the text rammed through a Babel Fish translator. An unforgiveable blot on the oeuvre of the author, who as a teacher should be ashamed, as well as on the publishing industry in general. A complete waste of my money and an insult to boot. Recommendation to the author: get it proof read and issue a thorougly corrected second edition ASAP!
PS: From what I could glean there is some good advice buried in this book underneath the plethora of clunky expression and errors, but come on, if you're going to write a book you do need to make sure that it's a pleasant, professionally-presented reading perience also.
"the" mixing book, December 19, 2008

I hope this review helps for someone looking to buy this book. This is a very technical book but thoroughly read it is easily understandable. Keep in mind this is a mixing book, you will not find any help with recording or mastering. This book will help you master the tools you have to perfect your music from a long and detailed chapter on compression (which I found very helpful) to a thorough chapter on eq...graphic, parametric, filters and much more. I wish it dealt more with artistic uses of these tools but I guess it is up to the individual to experiment. Also I wish there were more detail on dither and sample rates but you will probably find that more in a mastering book. If you are a beginner, intermediate, semi pro or even pro you will find this book extremely valuable. The included DVD is just as valuable being able to listen several hundred short clips with the different tools employed to listen to the difference. If you mix music buy this book.

Cheers.
This is the book to own....., October 15, 2008

As a home studio owner and pro musician of 40 years I am always on the lookout for that "next bit of info" that will push me to yet again improve...and this book was it. I have looked at this book for month's and thought..."Man, is it REALLY worth the $$?"
Now, as I look at my bookshelf full of "Mixing & Mastering & Studio Tips & Tricks" books, I can honestly say that this is the best book I have bought over the years.....period. Read what everyone else has wrote here in their reviews, and you got the gist of it, this book is the bomb!
Even if you "know it all", I recommend this book for 3 chapters, Compression, Reverb, and Gates-Expanders. Written so that ANYONE can understand it, but deep enough to make us old timers go "WHOA..." And the DVD, full of example audio clips and 4 full mixes that are tore apart at the end of the book, just drive the information home.
All of the reviews are correct(including the "eglash" in places), if you are serious about your Sound and Audio in general, this is the book to own. If you REALLY want to understand what the Ratio control does, on anything that uses one, this is the book to own. If you really want to improve your Engineering & Mixing Skills, this is the book to own. If you are using a computer to do audio, this is the book to own. If you use Cubase, Music Studio, Pro Tools, Audacity, or the Kristal Audio Engine, this is the book to own. It is worth every penny!
Can you tell I like the book?! I am on my 2nd read thru!
