Sturdy and Reliable Design NETGEAR's GS100 series desktop switches are housed in a compact sturdy metal case designed without the need for internal fans, keeping operation both silent and more reliable. It can be placed on a flat surface or you can use the included wall mount kit to hide it away on the wall.
Simple Setup and Stellar Performance
Plug in your Ethernet cables and connect a power cord, and you're ready to go. There is no software to install or settings to configure. The switch features auto-sensing ports which automatically obtains the fastest possible connection. There are no toggle switches or special crossover cables. The switch will honor priority tags at both the Layer 2 and Layer 3 level if you have your network set to support jumbo frames.
Every port supports up to 2000 Mbps in dedicated bandwidth. Automatic flow control ensures smooth traffic. There is a queue buffer memory of 12 kbytes per port and a MAC address database size of 4,000. The switch has status LEDs for power, and link, speed, and activity for each port.

Great product while it works, October 28, 2008

Douglas R. TiceBought 2 of these and they both worked for a day. 2nd day one started getting flakey. Works for about 3 minutes after power cycling. I'm not a happy camper. These felt much heftier than my previous DLink 10/100 switches. Not much good if they don't work. I'm going to return one under warranty and hopefully the new one works. I need 3 more but I won't buy any more Netgear products until I get more satisfaction. Buy with caution!

As the IT manager for a medium-sized business, I really like how solid these switches feel, but I won't be using them again. I used the switches in my home network, to help cut down on wiring back to the core switch. The Netgear GS108 failed after 17 months with the well documented "Blinking Lights of Death" malfunction, caused by failing capacitors. Unfortunately, I have several more that were purchased during the same time frame.
I recommend against purchasing this make and model of switch.
Capacitor Fix for Faulty Netgear GS108, October 14, 2008

Anyone who has one of these Netgear switches that died after a year or two should Google "Netgear GS108 capacitor". If you are handy with a soldering iron, you can quickly fix the problem yourself for just a few dollars by replacing two blown capacitors.
(This is not intended as an excuse for Netgear shipping such shoddy product, nor is it intended to encourage more people to buy the GS108. I merely wanted to help inform people who already own this product that they can revive dead units.)

I used to swear by Netgear during my years of corporate IT servitude, but it seems that they've really abandoned any quality goals when it comes to their consumer grade equipment. This is the third (and last) piece of almost brand new Netgear equipment that is sitting in my parts closet unused.
Every couple of hours it will disconnect all the users/devices attached to it. This disconnect would last anywhere from 15 seconds to a minute or more. Definitely puts a kink in large file transfers, video streaming and online gaming.
I got a D-Link gigabit switch to replace it and couldn't be happier. D-Link DGS-2208 8-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch I must admit I prefer the build and look of the Netgear (it's solid and the rear facing LEDs are great) as opposed to the D-Link's plasticky lightness, but it's all about performance, not looks now, isn't it?

Worked great for about one year. Then the flashing green lights of death that others have documented started. Just thought I'd add my vote to avoid this product.
