Difficult to install and use, January 6, 2009

I give it one star for price. I purchased a Western Digital external book drive to use as my backup device. Turns out I needed to reformat the book drive from FAT to NTFS to get the backup to run. But you don't get a message telling you that. Instead you get something about unable to connect to services??? So after uninstalling and reinstalling Ghost, which also requires an uninstall and reinstall of my Norton AV, I got smart and search the web for an answer. Found it, reformatted my drive, and the backup started working correctly. That only took 2 days of my time.
Then there's the recovery disk. Kept getting an error about unable to erase the CD. Other programs had no problem with the CD. Was wiser this time and researched it on the web first this time. Found out some gibberish about reloading the driver for the program used by Norton to interact with the drive (I have a brand new Dell laptop). Did that a couple of times and finally got the program to create a custom recover disk for me. 1/2 a day there. Still haven't tested it yet.
Not a program for the faint of heart or the inexperienced PC user. I can usually muddle my way around but not with this program.

I've used this product since it was Drive Image from PowerQuest. Beginning At Version 9, Symantec bought up the Drive Image code and repackaged as Ghost. The product is mature and works perfectly for me every time. Importantly, it is also useful for people who are blind and use screen readers to access Windows. I tried True Image 2009 from another manufacturer for it's claims of easy use but that product failed with my screen reader while Ghost worked well with the JAWS screen reader. I purchased this new version moving up from V9 to backup a VISTA computer which was not supported by my earlier version. The product has become even smarter and more smoothly integrated into the computer. Be sure to run the updater after installing as Symantec seems to make regular improvements to the code base .
Good, but could be better., December 16, 2008

For the most part it does what it's suppose to do. Excellent for maintianing a Back-Up. Particular problem encountered was; this Ghost works within "Windows", with something running in the background that we could not identify and shut off, it would not make a good copy we could use when copying a worn out hard drive to a new one. It would copy but not run (tried three times). Solution; Had to find a copy of older Ghost 12 which works outside of windows, it made the copy, worked fine copying the primary disc to new hard drive, worked first time. We then reloaded Ghost 14 to use as a backup program for new Backup hard drive, works well.
This may be particular problem for what we had running, but Ghost 12 had no problem.

I've used Ghost for a few years. It usually works fine. I use off the shelf PCs and do not have any trouble restoring (luckily only once in all this time). Recently, I added Network Attached Storage (NAS) to my home network. Ghost 10 and 12 worked for a while then had problems doing incremental backups. This newest rev seems to have solved whatever the issues were as I have been doing incremental backups fine for a few months now.
