Good for amateur videos but crashes too much., November 19, 2009

The Pinnacle interface is easy to use and they have been making professional editing equipment for quite some time so they understand video. The software came with a green backdrop for chromakey effect which was a nice touch. Editing videos is relatively simple, and more intuitive than Adobe Premiere. But somehow every time I try to burn a DVD it crashes. I have taken to saving the video and using a different burner software. I've uninstalled Nero as it became too top heavy and did not sync well with Pinnacle and I am just using my computers resident burner software.

This software works best if you have enough processing power and RAM. You also need to have a separate graphics card (rather than integrated) to use certain video effects. It seems that some other people have had better success with burning the final DVD. If it works for you great, for me the biggest annoyance was the burn process, and I opted to use other software for it.



Can't Even Perform BASIC Functions Properly!, November 6, 2009

On the positive side:
I have successfully installed this on a vista-64 system and have not noticed any especially untoward effects.
Also, it does import and work with .mov files, something which some other Windows oriented products do not.

However, there are numerous bugs which render it close to worthless. In particular, the menuing system is awful.
I bought this product to do something extremely simple: import several .mov files and burn them onto a dvd with a simple 1 level menu. The menu produced is pathetic. Although a "preview" of the menu shows that it will highlight the menu item which is "selected", it does not do so on the dvd once it is burned. Very frustrating. Actually, it sometimes works with small files, but for most projects, it does not. I ended up only using the format converter to convert the .mov files to .mpeg2 files and then used the free "Windows DVD Maker" (came with Vista) to burn the movies to a dvd. Although the "Windows DVD Maker" has only the very crudest of menus, at least it highlights one's selection on the TV screen so you know which video you will activate.

Save your self from hours of aggravating i have a top of the line gameing rig and this program carshes more then it works and customer support is horific i dont review things generly because most times even if the product is half decent i could deal with it but this is complete waste of time and money.



A good choice up from WMM, November 4, 2009

For those moving up from Window Movie Maker, which I found very streamlined and intuitive, Pinnacle 12 is a good choice. I tried Adobe, and found it baffling. Pinnacle is at least comprehensible. Of great importance is the Pinnacle forum--without a good active forum to figure out workarounds and known problems, any NLE will drive you nuts. (User manuals, Pinnacle's being no exception, are virtually useless for complicated systems of video editing, since if you're a confused newcomer you're probably asking the wrong question anyhow).

For any of these editors, a decent computer makes a big difference (dual core, 3 gigs ram, upgraded video card). If you intend to commit AVCHD, quad core and at least 6 ram. I have stuck with SD.

However, everything comes at a price. The old WMM, once mastered, was a charm: load, edit, title, make a DVD with tasteful and very simple templates.

Pinnacle does more, and does it better. Yet Pinnacle titles are a project in themselves, and the DVD menus, well, prepared to feel stupid over and over again. The problem is that of the 1,000,000 things this program can do, it's always your fault if you just want to do ONE OF THEM.

Download the trial version before purchase. You'll know in 15 days whether this is the NLE for you. I'd like to emphasize the need for a thorough study of user reviews before downloading any trial. That's because the work you do getting to know the program, in the event you decide not to buy it, is entirely wasted. The best test is to make a movie with the trial version and burn a DVD. You should feel good about the program--not like the calculus test is Tuesday and you're headed for a D.

Upgrade your video card before any trial. You'll need a better-than-stock card in any case, and if you don't upgrade first you'll never know whether the trial version, or your low-end video card, was causing all the problems.

For what it's worth, Pinnacle works fine on my machine (for SD editing):
Vista 32 Home premium
dual core AMD 2.6/ 3gig ram
ATI Radeon HD 4350 (inexpensive upgrade from cheap integral card)

Great product. Very versatile. Easy to incorporate other media into the basic captured video. Need a very good computer though to get a full 2 hour video on a DVD. I still haven't made one. Got up to a little over 1 hour of video.
