This program may not work on Windows Vista, November 22, 2009
By

Every time I try to run this program, it tells me I have to register the program before I can use it. When I click the "next" button to register, I am prompted to enter the administrator password. After I do this I get the message "Registration requires administrator privileges. ... Blah, blah, blah" and it won't let me register. I have tried reinstalling the program numerous times, including doing a clean installation, disabling windows services, disabling the virus check program, etc, and every combination of these. I worked two weeks with Sony help, after which they offered to give me the previous version of the program, Sony Vegas Pro version 8.0. Version 8.0 works, except that the on-line help is not accessible. (I would like to use the "trimmer" window, but it's not plain how it works and I'm so tired of this damn thing I've given up on it.)
This may be just another windows vista problem but, if so, Sony should know how to get around it. At least they should be able to bypass the electronic registration and register it manually for me, but no, they can't do that.
This is the worst experience I've ever had with computer software. My advice is stay away.
Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 w/Platinum Pro Pack, November 21, 2009
By
DB RobinsonI purchased Vegas mainly to edit old VHS tapes which I am converting to digital. The process of editing a wide variety of digital audio and video formats is quick and easy. You will have to read through help screens to learn the process. You can quickly select, add other files, clip, trim, mask, crossfade, etc with ease.
The edit process is very responsive, even working with multiple 20 gig files. The rendering of the final video is slow. I have 2 gig of DD2 1066 with q9450 quad core running on vista. Rendering 6 hours of video will take 5 hours. Results are dependably excellent. Choice of device outputs and configuration is excellent. My machine can render while doing anything but playing high end video games.
The biggest negative so far is that I cannot get Vegas to capture live video on my Hauppauge 1800 card. Working on it, I would put this one on Hauppauge for now.
The biggest positive is being able to record FM audio all night. Then quickly render each individual song to an import folder, which is then pulled into windows media library with all the album, artist, track info. Very nice way to expand my audio library. Starting to pick up on artists which I would not have thought of previously. Very cool.
I am very new to digital editing and just scratching the surface of Vegas tools. Overall, I am very pleased with what I can do with Vegas. Amazon shipped very quickly for a good price.
No registration number included for NewBlue FX, November 10, 2009
By

The card with the registration number for the NewBlue FX software was not included in the box. After several hours over as many days talking, calling, and emailing support for the software with no results, I sent the product back and requested a replacement. Guess what? The second one didn't have it either. So back to the phone. One support tech admitted they were having trouble with this issue. So why hadn't they developed a game plan to correct it and thereby eliminating the frustration of the purchasers in trying to get the software to run? Finally got a support tech who provided a number and the software was finally working. There would have been less than the two stars I left had it not been for the quick service in replacing the first software purchase. Beyond the irritation of time spent on the problem, it's a good software for my purposes.
Raw and buggy., November 9, 2009

The package is raw - many features are strangely missing or "undercooked". You can edit in AVCHD format, but you can't burn a BD, for example. You can create a meaningless "BD video stream" without audio, but you can't create a 1920x1080 .mpg video (like, for example, in the Pinnacle Studio). For someone who works with HD video, the Architect is utterly useless.
I frequently found the clips "flickering" incessantly, and had to re-cut repeatedly. There are also the perennial bugs, like crashes and inability to render.
Disappointing overall.

I've been using earlier pro versons for years, thought I would see if this would work out after a meltdown of my old computer, since the new computer would not run my old programs. I wanted to save the money and figured this would work- so far it seems to be able to handle it. To be honest, I'll probably go ahead and pay an upgrade fee to the pro verson- you don't have to, its just my preference. This seems a solid program and enough for most.
