AMATURES BEWARE !, September 5, 2009

Yes, despite the hype, this is strictly a professional program...that is unless you have HOURS to struggle with the non-intuitive controls or the "tell you half the story then leave you hanging" instructions. To avoid frustration, check out the other programs that are more amature friendly. Yes , you can - and I have- make wonders with this program but it isn't worth it.



Couldn't be installed under Windows Vista, March 21, 2009

I recently bought Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0 because the video processing shareware software which comes with my Canon VIXIA HF100, ImageMixer 3SE is kind of cumbersome to use and has no documentation.
The Movie Studio software seemed to install on my Windows Vista Home Premium desktop without any noticeable problems. However, when you try to run it for the first time, it forces you to register on-line. When I clicked the ok button to register, it gave me a popup that said "registration requires administrator privileges. Please run vegas Movie Studio ... from an administrator account to complete registration". So I tried starting movie studio from my admin account and got the same results. Then I tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling from my administrative account with the same results.
So I got on the Sony chat support and asked them what to do.
For the next two weeks I got one suggestion after another from Sony's tech support: "Uninstall and reinstall as admin" ans: I already tried that; "turn off your virus software" ... No, that didn't work; "Right click the program icon and choose run as administrator" ... Same results; "do a clean uninstall and reinstall" ... their instructions involved turning off all the startup services but they didn't bother to tell you to turn them back on again so I had hours of research to find out how to get my desktop running again. This didn't work either and also made my computer unstable for a week until I did a system restore to a date before the install. Finally, Sony support gave up and offered to give me Vegas Movie Studio Pro 8.0. This installed and ran ok. Of course, I can't get my money back from Sony because I bought it from Amazon and I can't return it to Amazon because it's opened.
I doubt that there are many users that have run into this problem or Sony would be aware of the problem and have a fix. I think the problem is probably mostly a Windows Vista problem (surprise, surprise). But either way, if you buy it, be prepared to take a loss. And if you have this problem, hopefully you're a Vista guru and will be able to figure out a way around it. Otherwise, don't waste your time on Sony tech support.

After countless hours this software is not at all user friendly , overly complex, and mostly marketing hype. Buy a Mac and use iMovie to save the frustration from this awful product.



Easy to use, great features, never a problem, August 15, 2007

I've been using this software to pump out DVD after DVD for the past 2 years, and I have never been disappointed with this product. I created a DVD of my son's Little League tournament, and I had like a week to put it together and it was my very first project. I got it done because this product is very intuitive to use. First rate for something under $100.

I tried them all - Adobe Premiere, Magix Movie Edit, ULead, Pinnacle, and Nero. This beat them all due to the following features:

- Unparalled help - the "Show me how" feature is amazing, an interactive tutorial that teaches you how to perform an activity
- The prevew video is clear (not choppy), and allows you to accurately view your project
- The interface is intuitive - powerful yet still very easy to use once you have passed the small learning curve
- Even though the DVD burning software is separate, it presents many of the same benefits (easy to use, professional results, and intuitive
- For the price, I would recommend this product over Premiere, Pinnacle, and any other movie editing software product in the $100 range

Just seems to make sense all the way around.
