REVIEW: "'Moving with Motion,' a Professionals Guide' is certainly one of the better Motion DVD tutorials I have used. While most tutorials of this type have a similar syllabus, what makes this tutorial stand out for me is its producer and narrator, Stephen Smith. His humor and enthusiasm for his subject is absolutely infectious which makes working through the many sequential chapters considerably more enjoyable than similar discs I have reviewed narrated by knowledgeable but somewhat droll speakers….'Moving with Motion' has enough in it to benefit all levels of users.

Chapter 2: Getting Started (7:55): An introduction to the fundamentals of Motion.

Chapter 3.1: Behaviors (16:52): Learn the ins and outs of behaviors, a feature that can save you enormous amounts of time when creating content. You’ll learn how to make a behavior do what you want in very little time. This chapter will also cover how the unique parameter behaviors can play a role in your next project. Learn how to make an object animate to the beat of music.

Chapter 4: Content (8:16): Motion comes with over 1,000 free content items. This chapter focuses on how you can customize them to meet your needs. This tutorial also builds a foundation for working with gradients and how they can enhance a shape. You will also learn how to work with the shape in the canvas with the adjust 3D transform tool.

Chapter 5: Retiming (21:29): Changing the speed of a video clip is a great way to place emphasis on certain sections of a clip. In this video tutorial you will learn how to manipulate the speed of two free HDV clips that come included with this training DVD. By the end of the chapter you will know how to perform time remapping in the inspector, timeline, with behaviors and in the keyframe editor. In the keyframe editor you will also gain an understanding of how keyframes work. Learn how frame blending modes such as optical flow can enhance your speed change.

Chapter 6: Motion Tracking (18:48):Motion tracking is a must have tool that can impress any audience. This DVD will show you how a one point or two point motion track can create a big impression. You will learn how to track an object and match its scale. Plus, learn how to use the four-corner pin motion track.

You’ll also gain understanding of how to create shapes with the bezier and b-spline tool. This chapter also covers working with and arranging text to create a professional look. You’ll gain an advanced knowledge of gradients, text style presets and how to replace that ugly default text style icon with your custom text style preset.Learn how to save time by relying on the free hand mask tool and the track points behavior to create a mask that tracks your image for you. This is a faster way to rotoscope a clip.

Review by COW member, Gabe Strong: I bought your Money Making Graphics and Effects for Final Cut Studio 2 DVD and it was great. So when I saw this DVD, I ordered it as well. I just got it yesterday and as expected it is a top notch DVD full of really good stuff. If you want to learn Motion, creating stuff that clients will like, I HIGHLY recommend this DVD!

Moving with Motion files
by Stephen Smith
James,
Sorry for the inconvenience in your Motion training. I hope you have enjoyed the training so far. I'm not sure why those files are not working, the DVD has almost been out for two years and this is the first I have heard about it. I'm not sure if the disc was corrupt or why that happened. Please send me an e-mail and I'll e-mail you the files you would like. My e-mail address is: stephen at lonepeakproductions.com

by Robert Bracken
I'm using the Moving with Motion DVD and I can't find the "blur fade in" animation you asked for. It should be under Text Sequence - Text Fade - "blur fade in"

The DVD rocks bro! Good job.

Please let me know! Thank you!

Ah, yes. Some of the Text Behaviors where removed from Motion 4 because of the Adjust Glyph tool. I would substitute the, Text Sequence, Text-Basic, Blur In behavior. Sorry for the inconvenience and I hope this helps.

What type of screen capture software do you use that zooms into what you're trying to show and also shows on screen what keys you've hit on your keyboard?

Bobby
Apple Motion Training
by Stephen Smith
The screen capture software I used to make the "Moving with Motion" DVD is SnapzPro. It creates a Quicktime movie of my screen for me. Then I brought the Quicklime movie into Motion and added the movement there. I then created the animated short cut keys in Motion and added them where they where needed. Hope this helps and best of luck.

HI Stephen,

What do I do if my keyboard short cuts do not work? Only F5 and F6 seem to work in Motion. The other F numbers do not.

Thanks

Apple Motion Training DVD
by Stephen Smith
On your laptop you need to hit the "Fn" key with the F keys to make it work. If you want to program Motion to recognize the F keys so it doesn't change the brightness of the screen or what ever in Motion follow these steps:

System Preferences, Click on Keyboard, Click on Keyboard shortcuts, Applications Shortcuts, Add the Motion Applications, In the Give Title section make sure it is the exact title of what you want, Add the F key by holding down the Fn key and the F key you want.

Best of luck and I hope this helps.

Re: Moving with Motion

Dear Stephen,

I bought "Moving with Motion" some time ago and started to work through it now. I stumbled after only a few minutes when I tried to follow chapter three. The ai files do not appear in the Motion file browser (the piton:logo.psd does so I take it that I am at the right spot). When I try to import the ai files via the import function from the file menu, the two ai files are greyed out. I can open them in Illustrator all right.

Do you have any idea what the problem might be (I suppose the fact that I am working in PAL does not cause difficulties).

Kind regards,

Joerg

Joerg,
Thanks for supporting the Creative COW Masters Series and for purchasing my DVD Moving with Motion. I'm sorry for any delay in your Motion training and hope you have found the DVD useful. I put the DVD on multiple computers and finally re-created the same problem on one of them. It was a computer with Motion 3 and Illustrator CS4. It did not like the older Illustrator files. I re-saved them as a CS4 file and they work great. I've attached the files here:

Best of luck.

Re: Moving with Motion
by Timothy Parsons
Hello Stephen!

My name is Timothy Parsons, I am a London based editor and I am slowly learning Motion and I have a question regarding "Moving with Motion", for over a year now I have been hacking my way and bumbling through motion projects and in some well earned time off (Finally!!!) I have set to learning as much as I can to save time, avoid sleepless nights and gravitate toward general sanity whilst using motion.

I have gone through the Apple Pro Trainning series book for Motion 4 twice this week through all of the tutorials and I am still feeling like there is an ocean more to learn, would you recommend this training series to me as way of improving skills and overall speed in the application use or is there something else you offer than can really make me a motion master?

Thanks for you time on this and have a most excellent weekend!

All the best,

Timothy Parsons.

T.Parsons
Should you buy Moving with Motion
by Stephen Smith
Timothy,
Sorry for the delayed response. My wife and I where at the hospital having a baby around the time you posted your question. I think my training DVD Moving with Motion will be a great addition to your learning library. I think you will really enjoy the section of using lots of trackers to roto-scope objects out of a scene. If you watch the Moving with Motion commercial it is the part where you see the mountain and a ton of trackers. Keep in mind I am biased. Best of luck.
